Notes

Bond House Gallery, ASC Studios, New Cross, London

Alia Pathan showed a film Emperor Far Away, in the style of a music video. The footage and lyrics centred on E-waste in developing countries, specifically China. The discussion revolved around the high production values of the video, and the sense that this lead to some confusion at to whether the film was a parody of a music video or a work which used the means of production of the music industry to critique e-waste and/or the music industry itself.

Deniz Soezen showed a projected film titled Surya Namaz, flanked by additional 2 monitors featuring interview footage of the protagonists from the main film. It emerged that Surya is Sanskrit and Namaz is Farsi for the prayer pose in each culture. The discussion centred on the way the film explored devotion, or spirituality, through practice and through the body. There was discussion about the contrasting effects of the different approaches in the edited and more poetic main film (projected) and the very mater-of-fact documentary-style interviews of the 2 monitors.
